Messi vs Ronaldo: the trophy haul, compared

Two of the greatest footballers there have ever been have spent two decades being compared to each other, usually by people with a firm opinion already in hand. We're skipping the opinion. Here's every major honour each man has actually won, side by side, as of October 2026 — both are still playing, so neither column is final.

Club football

Both have won league titles in more than one country, but not the same number of countries. Messi's spent his career across three leagues (Spain, France, USA); Ronaldo's spread across four (England, Spain, Italy, Saudi Arabia).

Manchester United: 3 Premier League
Real Madrid: 2 La Liga
Juventus: 2 Serie A
Al-Nassr: 1 Saudi Pro League (2025–26, his first title there)

Domestic cups follow a similar shape either side: Messi has 7 Copa del Rey wins with Barcelona on top of French and American cup silverware with PSG and Inter Miami; Ronaldo has FA Cup and League Cup wins at Manchester United, a Copa del Rey with Real Madrid, Coppa Italia with Juventus, and Saudi cup honours with Al-Nassr. Between them, the Champions League medals stretch back to a competition whose look and sound both changed in 1992 — we've covered how the European Cup became the Champions League if you want that backstory.

International football

This is the clearest gap in either direction. Messi has the one trophy Ronaldo doesn't, and it's the biggest one there is.

Ronaldo's Nations League wins (2019 and 2025, beating Spain on penalties in the most recent final) sit in a slightly different competitive tier to Messi's Copa América titles (2021 and 2024) — UEFA introduced the Nations League in 2018, decades after the Copa América, so it's not quite an apples-to-apples trophy. We've counted both as "a continental title" above rather than pretending they're identical.

Messi also has an Olympic gold (Beijing 2008) and a U-20 World Cup (2005) from his early Argentina career, plus the 2022 Finalissima. Ronaldo's early Portugal honours are thinner by comparison — his senior international trophy cabinet really only opened up from his thirties onward.

What this doesn't settle

A trophy count favours players who stayed fit, stayed at clubs built to win things, and in Ronaldo's case, kept playing competitively into his forties across four different leagues. It says very little about a single moment of individual brilliance, a specific head-to-head, or what either man meant to the teams they played for. We've laid out the honours boards; what they add up to is genuinely a matter of opinion, and not one we're offering here.
